MICROCHIPPING

VET MICROCHIPPING

Have you ever had a pet stray from home or go missing? It’s a very stressful experience for any pet owner! Unfortunately, without proper identification systems in place, very few pets are reunited with their rightful owners and families. Thankfully, there are a number of ways you can make sure your beloved pet will find its way back to you should they decide to go on an unscheduled adventure. A microchip is a tiny chip approximately the size of a grain of rice that contains a permanent identification number.

Once the chip is implanted between the shoulders of your pet (just under the skin), this number becomes unique to your pet and links your information (name, address, contact details, etc.) to a national database. Therefore, should your pet go missing and is taken to a veterinary clinic, council pound or animal shelter, the staff will use a scanner to retrieve the number of this microchip. They can then search for the owner’s details (i.e. your details) on the database and take the necessary steps to reunite you with your loved one! It’s therefore important that if you have your pet microchipped, to keep your contact details up-to-date at all times so you can be contacted. In addition to microchipping your pet, it’s also a great idea to use collars, name tags and council registration tags to make sure your pet can be identified. Be aware that these can become unreadable or fade in time though, which is why a permanent microchip is the best form of permanent identification available.
